Jaga my Rocker

Lately I've been immersed in the experimental sounds of Jaga Jazzist. There they are, down there in my inspiration section. Give it a click and listen.

I haven't been able to tell you how much a revelation their music has been to me. Suddenly, it became so clear what I always wanted to do. I wanted to experiment and play with music!

I've decided to steer the band into the Experimental course. Junhong spun out a tribal folk taiwanese song right after I met him and told him about my plans, and I was like, wow that's fast.

But there's a thick line between inspiration and intuitive instinct. The ideas I've got aren't very radical. They still stay within some confine, comfortable and happy. When Junhong sent us his tribal song honestly, I felt a bit ashamed. I was not able to get the thing into my nerves. I had goosebumps listening to it.

I was quite troubled with that. I mean, I set out not to be an egoistical fucker who deigns upon everything, but here I am feeling weird about the tribal song.

Battled through the day... into the evening. Then I read in Jaga Jazzists' website that they have 10 members in their lineup, and the guy explains :

"... With 10 members, you also gets 10 different opinions, feelings and taste. With a result that the band never stands still. "

I suddenly realised why the concept of a band lies on its members. When it comes to music, people come together to rattle their ideas n biases and sounds n tones in one carboard box and work on what they see in the box.

If it's experimental music we want, then we have to have as many different ideas n opinions as possible, all while remaining professionally calm and reasonably open-minded.

Cos the whole business of experimenting, is to find a ways and the means to link two unrelated chords and one crazy riff, and ultimately, link one member with another, musically, emotionally, professionally.
